Synthesis Flashcards
1
Q
Explain why the synthesis of pharmaceuticals now requires the production of a single optical isomer.
A
Previously, drugs were chiral compounds. While one isomer of the drug had the required effect, its mirror image could lead to devastating effects.
Producing a single isomer means that risks from undesirable side effects are reduced and drug doses are reduced by half.
2
Q
Are there any disadvantages of producing a single optical isomer
A
In nature, most drugs are produced as a single optical isomer. However, in a lab,a mixture is usually formed. Complicated separation techniques increases the cost of synthesis.
3
Q
What are three methods of separating a single optical isomer?
A
- using enzymes as a biological catalyst
- using chemical chiral catalysts
- using natural chiral molecules (e.g. sugars) as starting materials
