Synth Flashcards
When was the digital synth first created?
1955
What is an envelope?
made up of attack, decay, sustain and release. This controls the shape of a parameter, most commonly the volume.
What is cutoff on a synth
the frequency where the filter starts/stops working
What does LFO stand for?
Low frequency oscillator
When was the analogue synth invented?
1920s/1930s
What two types of filters does an analogue synth use?
Low pass filters and high pass filters
Did early analogue synths have a mono or stereo output?
Mono output
What does attack do?
Sets the time it takes for the signal to rise from an amplitude of 0 to full amplifier
What does decay do?
Sets the time it takes for the signal to fall from full amplitude to the designated sustain level
What does the pitch bend do
add a portamento effect to a note
What is the modulation wheel used for?
To modulate an LFO to produce vibrato
What does release do?
Sets the time it takes for the sound to decay from the sustain level to an amplitude of 0 when the key is released.
What does sustain do?
Sets the steady amplitude level produced when a key is held down
What does a preset on an analogue synth allow you to do?
Save previous used/created sounds
What are the different waveforms used in a synth
Sawtooth, triangle, Square, Pulse and sine waves
What did original synths use instead of MIDI?
Control voltages
What does an LPF do
Used to remove high frequency noise form a signal/audio
What does an HPF
Used to remover low frequency noise from a signal/audio
What is the name of the synth that is the first commercial synth?
The MiniMoog
What does a control voltage do
controls a parameter of the synth, such as note pitch
