Syntax
The way an author chooses to join words into phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Subject complement
The word or clause that follows a linking verb an complements, or completes, the subject of the sentence by renaming it or describing it
Predicate Nominative
A noun, group of nouns, or noun clause that renames the subject.
Predicate adjective
An adjective, that follows a linking verb. Ex: Warren remained optimistic
Subordinate Clause
contains a subject and a verb but can not stand alone
Loose Sentence/Non-Periodic Sentence
A type of sentence in which the main idea comes first
Parallelism
The framing of words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs to give similarity. can involve repetition of a grammatical element.
Periodic Sentence
The opposite of loose sentence. The main Idea is a the end.
Anaphora
A sub-type of parallelism. When there is exact repetition at the beginning of successive lines.
Syndecdone
a figure of speech where a part of something is used to represent the whole. Its like calling the trumpet section “The trumpets”
Litote
A double negative
EX: Berube isn’t that bad
metonymy
A figure of speech in which the name of one object is substituted for that of another closely associated with it.
Paradox
A statement that seems to be self-contradictory.
EX: It was the best of times i was the worst of times.
Hyperbole
A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement.
