simple sentence
contain 1 independent clause
compound sentence
contains 2 independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) or a ;
Complex sentence
contains independent clause and 1+ dependent clauses
compound-complex sentences
contain 2+ independent clauses and 1+ dependent clauses
periodic sentences
contain independent clause and 1+ dependent clause and don’t make complete sense until end of sentence
convoluted sentences
sentences that have dependent clauses inserted in the middle of independent clauses (basically, sentences in which commas are used instead of ()/ where the main clause is interupted)
loose sentences
have main clause which is followed by 1+ dependent clauses. If loose sentence has multiple successive clauses, becomes CUMULATIVE
declarative
e.g. I like milk.
exclamatory
e.g. I like milk!
interrogatory
Do you like milk?
imperative
Drink the milk.
run-ons
sentences that lack proper punctuation and should be broken up in some way
independent clause
a clause is a group of words that contains at least one subject and one verb
dependent clause
a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought
