Refers to the grammatical structure or form of a sentence, which determines its function and how it interacts with other elements of language.
Sentence Type
Purpose: Used to make a statement or convey information.
Structure: Typically follows a subject + verb order.
Example: She likes ice cream.
Declarative Sentence
Purpose: Used to ask a question.
Structure: Often involves subject-auxiliary inversion or a question word (who, what, where, etc.).
Example: Are you coming? or Where is she?
Interrogative Sentence
Purpose: Used to give a command, request, or instruction.
Structure: Typically starts with a verb, and the subject (“you”) is implied.
Example: Close the door.
Imperative Sentence
Purpose: Used to express strong emotions or feelings.
Structure: Often starts with words like “What” or “How” and ends with an exclamation mark.
Example: What a beautiful day!
Exclamatory Sentence
Refers to the arrangement or organisation of words, phrases and clauses within a sentence.
Sentence Structure
A sentence that contains one independent clause.
Simple Sentence
A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction.
Compound Sentence
A sentence that contains one independent clause and atleast one dependent clause.
Complex Sentence
A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and atleast one other dependent clause.
