Synovial Joint Flashcards
articular surfaces are flat
Only short slipping or gliding movements are allowed
Ex ) intercarpal joints of the wrist
Plane joint,
cylindrical end of one bone fits into a trough-shaped surface on another Bone
Examples are the elbow joint, ankle joint, and the joints between the phalanges of the fingers
Hinge joint,
rounded end of one bone fits into a ring of
bone (and possibly ligaments).
Examples: The proximal radioulnar joint and the joint between the atlas and the dens of the axis
Pivot joint,
Egg-shaped articular surface of one bone fits into an oval concavity in another
Example: knuckle (metacarpophalangeal) joints
Condylar joint
Each articular surface has both convex and concave areas, like a saddle for a horse
Example: carpometacarpal joints in the thumb
Saddle joint
Spherical head of one bone fits into the round socket in another.
allow movement in all axes, including rotation, and
are the most freely moving synovial joints.
- Examples: The shoulder and hip joints
Ball-and-socket
