Syndromes Flashcards
Horner’s Syndrome
PICA Syndrome
Rare
Affects eyes & face (nerve pathway to eye interrupted.
Can be caused by stroke, tumor, or unknown
Ptosis & miosis
Ipsilateral impaired flushing & sweating
Wallenberg Syndrome
PICA Syndrome Aka lateral medullary Syndrome Lateral medullary infarct Hiccups Autonomic dysfunction Ptosis & miosis Ipsilateral ataxia
Basilar Artery Syndrome
Major stroke symptoms Sudden decrease LOC Oculomotor difficulties Facial paresis Quadraparesis Locked in syndrome
Carotid
LVO
Aphasia if dominant hemisphere affected.
Neglect if nondominant hemisphere affected.
Contralateral homonymous hemianopsia
Contralateral motor & sensory loss of face, arm, & leg.
Conjugate ipsilateral eye deviation.
Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO)
Sudden painless unilateral loss of vision (Marcus Gunn pupil)
Carotid artery dissection
LVO
Horner’s syndrome
Anhidrosis: decreases sweating
MCA
LVO
Contralateral motor & sensory loss of face, arm, and leg.
Arm more involved than legs
ACA
LVO
Contralateral motor & sensory loss of face, arm, and leg.
Legs more involved than arms
PCA
LVO
Supplies thalamus & midbrain Homonymous hemianopia Visual agnosia Dominant hemisphere: alexia, agraphia, prosopagnosia Bilateral: total blindness, amnesia
Weber’s syndrome
PCA Third nerve palsy Contralateral hemiplegia Affects central territory of PCA Bulbar muscle dysfunction
Parinaud’s syndrome
PCA
Upgaze
Convergence-retraction nystagmus
Primary conjugate downgaze
PICA
LVO
Wallenberg syndrome (aka lateral medullary syndrome): loss of pain & temp sensation in contralateral trunk & ipsilateral face. Dysphagia Dysarthria Dysphonja Ipsilateral loss of corneal reflex
AICA
LVO
Aka lateral pontine syndrome Vertigo Vomiting Nystagmus Falling towards side of legion Ipsilateral loss of sensation & paralysis to the face. Ipsilateral hearing loss
Basilar
Vertebrobasilar artery syndrome
LVO
Coma Quadriparesis Ataxia Dysarthria CN dysfunction Visual deficits
Locked-in syndrome
Occlusion of vertibrobasilar artery
