Syncope Flashcards
What is syncope
Transient loss of consciousness due to cerebral hypoperfusion (inadequate blood to brain)
Reflex syncope
Umbrella term for actions that lead to a decreased CO and SVR, therefore decreased MAP and syncope
3 types of reflex syncope
Vasovagal, situational reflex, carotid sinus
Vasovagal syncope
Faint triggered by emotional distress
Situational reflex syncope
Faint during/immediately after an event (cough)
Carotid sinus syncope
Mechanical manipulation of the neck or compression of the carotid sinus
Postural/orthostatic hypertension
Failure of baroreceptor reflex to respond to gravitational shifts in blood when moving from vertical to horizontal position, therefore drop in BP and syncope
Cardiac syncope
A cardiac event that causes a sudden drop in CO
