Synaptic transmission Flashcards
1
Q
What is the sensory neuron?
A
- It detects sensations at sensory receptors (eg: pain)
- An action potential travels across the nerve passing along the axon
- the electrical signal is converted into a chemical signal to cross the synapse
2
Q
What is the relay neuron?
A
- After synaptic transmission, a new action potential forms in the densities.
- This neuron is in the spine and it sends a signal to the CNS and a signal along its axon to the motor neuron
3
Q
What is the motor neuron?
A
- It detects the signal from the relay neuron by synaptic transmission and passes the signal along its own myelinated axon to stimulate an effector
- An effector could be a muscle in the arm moving it away from the source of pain
