Synaptic Transmission Flashcards
Synaptic Transmission definition
Process when neighbouring neurons
Communicate with eachother
by sending chemical messages across
the synaptic cleft that separates them
Neurotransmitters def
Brain chemicles released from synaptic vesicles
Relays signals across synapse from one neuron to another
Can have excitatory or inhibatory function (seratonin)
Excitation
When neurotransmitter (adrenaline)
Increases the positive charge of the post- synaptic neuron
This increases the liklihood the neuron will fire
and pass on the electrical impulse
Inhibition
When a neurotransmitter (seratonin)
Makes the charge of the post synaptic neuron negative
Decreases liklihood neuron will fire
And pass on electrical impulse
Synapse
Junction between 2 neurons
Includes:
presynaptic neuron
Synaptic cleft
Post synaptic receptor site
Vesicles
Small sacs
At the end of the presynaptic neuron
Contains neurotransmitters
That will be released into a synapse
Pre- synaptic neuron
The transmitting neuron
Before the synaptic cleft
Post- synaptic neuron
Neuron that is recieving the info
At the synapse
