synapses and reflexes Flashcards
what is a synapse
1) the connection between two neurons
2) the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap
3) these chemicals then set off a new electrical signal in the nest neuron
what are reflexes
reflexes are rapid, automatic responses to certain stimuli that do not involve the conscious part of the brain - they can reduce the chance of being injured.
what is a reflex arc
the passage of information in a reflex (from receptor to effector)
what is a reflex action
a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus that does not involve the conscious part of the brain.
describe the pathway of the reflex from stimulus to effector
. the stimulus is detected by receptors
. which send impulses along a sensory neuron to the CNS
. the impulse is transferred to a relay neuron
. it is then transferred to a motor neuron and travels along it to the effector
