What is schizophrenia?
- A long-term mental disorder which makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and imagined
- Characterised by positive symptoms, such as delusions, and negative symptoms, such as apathy
What is a feature?

What are 5 features of schizophrenia?
1) Recognised in every country and culture - 1% of population suffer from it
2) Most common mental illness in the world
3) More common in poorer sections of communities
4) More common and severe in men
5) Cannot be cured
What is a symptom?
Individual behaviours of the patient associated with the disorder
What is a positive symptom?
Behaviours which are additional to typical behaviours that can be affected by culture
List 4 positive symptoms
1- Thought insertion
2- Hallucinations
3- Delusions
4- Disordered thinking
What is thought insertion?
Feeling as if one’s thoughts are not one’s own
What are hallucinations?
Sensations, that appear to be real, but are created within the mind
What are delusions?
Fixed, false beliefs that conflict with reality
What is disordered thinking
A failure to be able to think straight
What is a negative symptom?
Behaviours which are missing from typical behaviour and often start before positive
List 3 negative symptoms
1- Poverty of speech
2- Social withdrawal
3- Apathy
What is poverty of speech?
Extrusive verbal feedback that contains little useful information
What is social withdrawal?
Avoiding people/activities
What is apathy?
Lack of feeling/emotion
