Subjectivity - what is considered pain by one person may be painless to another; location may be described incorrectly

Interpretability - pain and sensation of pain is complex, pain may be referred

  3. Investigations - to confirm/exclude diagnoses, lab/imaging investigations?

What steps should you go through with a patient presenting with abdominal pain?

A

Site - specific location of pain? Or more diffuse?
Onset - when did pain start? Develop suddenly or steadily? New?
Character - how does pain feel? Sharp/aching/burning/blunt
Radiation - does pain radiate elsewhere?
Associated symptoms - any other recent changes? Bowel issues/menstruation/urination
Timing - has pain changed over time? Better/worse/none
Exacerbating/relieving factors - does anything affect pain? Foods/movement/toilet trips
Severity - describe pain as rating 1-10
