acute self-limiting causes of cough, esp. an acute viral infection.

The recommended mixture should be tailored to the pt’s individual requirements.

should be used only in the short term, e.g.: cough suppressant for dry cough:

• pholcodine 1 mg/mL, 10–15 mL (o) 3–4 times/d or (if intractable)
• 2 mL liqnocaine 2% via nebuliser, for 5–10 minutes
