passing notes
Notes that aren’t part of the harmony that are between two notes in stepwise motion (usually between a third).
auxiliary notes
An ornamentation, such as a grace note, that is not part of harmony and unaccented, above note that is part of harmony.
episodic work
Think of fugue. Element that is digression from main structure of music. Ornamental or constructive passage.
idée fixe/leitmotif/motto theme
Recurring theme or character trait that makes up the structure of a piece.
power chord
Used in guitar music- chord that comprises of root and fifth.
essential and unessential notes
Essential note is one that is part of the chord. Unessential notes are passing notes, appoggiatura and suspensions etc.
tonicisation
The treatment of a note/ pitch as the temporary tonic in a piece.
minuet and trio structure
Usually ABA’ (minuet, trio, da capo of minuet). Both A and B sections are often small ternary.
through composed
Music that is fairly continuous, doesn’t repeat and doesn’t have sections.
ostinato
A continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm.
underscoring
In musical theatre, playing of music under dialogue or visual scene.
stretto
In fugue. Close overlapping of thematic material of subject of the fugue.
figuration
Repetition of same melodic or harmonic idea.
re-harmonisation
Where the original harmony is revised.
hemiola
Gives effect of shift between duple and triple metre. Two groups of 3 beats replaced by three groups of 2 beats.
