Expected pharm actions
Selective alpha,blockade results in the following
1-venous and arterial dilation
2-smooth muscle relaxation of prostatic capsule and bladder neck
Therapeutic uses
primary hypertension
Doxazosin/terazosin
1-decrease manifestations of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) which include urgency,frequency,and dysuria
Complications
1-first dose orthostatic hypotension;first dose given at night
Contraindications/precautions
Pregnancy risk cat C
Contraindicated in pts w/hypotension
Use cautiously in pts w/angina pectoris or renal insufficiency and in older adults
Interactions
1-antihypertensive meds have an additive effect
Nursing admin
1-can be taken with food
2-take dose at bedtime to decrease first dose hypotensive effect
3-safety measures to minimize effect of orthostatic hypotension
