Sympathetic Nerve Pathways Flashcards
What do the spinal nerve pathways innervate?
Skin and sweat glands
What do the postsynaptic sympathetic nerve pathways innervate?
Thoracic viscera (heart and lungs), neck, (esophagus), face
What do the splanchic nerve pathways innervate?
Abdominal viscera (small intesting, bladder)
What does the adrenal medulla pathway innervate?
Adrenal medulla of the kidney
What are the ganglia associate with the postsynaptic sympathetic nerve pathway?
Superior cervical ganglia
Middle cervical ganglia
Inferior cervical ganglia
What do nerves synapsing in Superior cervical ganglion innervate?
Salivary glands, blood vessels of head, sweat glands of head, eye (iris), arrector of muscle hairs of head
What do nerves synapsing in inferior and middle cervical ganglion innervate?
Thoracic viscera (heart and lungs), neck (esophagus)
Where do each pathways synapse?
- spinal
- postsympathetic
- splanchnic
- adrenal medulla
- paravertebral ganglia (sympathetic trunk)
- paravertebral ganglia (sympathetic trunk)
- prevertebral ganglia
- signal goes directly to effector organ
Types of sympathetic nerve pathways
