Q

Avoid rounding errors!

A

Work to at least one more digit than is required in the final answer and round to the appropriate significant figures or decimal places at the end of the whole calculation.

  1. Round your final answer so the reader knows the precision you’re confident of your answer to.
  2. You should only round at the end of a calculation.
  3. You should always write down your unrounded answer first in a calculation.
  4. If a question has several parts where you use a value from an earlier calculation in a later calculation, you should use the unrounded value from the first calculation in the later one. But refer back to the significant figures of the initial values. If you’re using a value you’ve previously calculated in a later calculation, use the unrounded value, but note that it brings with it an appropriate number of significant figures.
