SYMBOLS AND VALENCY Flashcards
MATTER
ANYTHING THAT OCCUPIES SPACE, HAS MASS AND CAN BE PERCEIVED BY THE SENSES, MAYBE PURE OR IMPURE IN NATURE.
ELEMENT
A PURE SUBSTANCE MADE UP OF ONE KIND OF ATOMS ONLY. IT CANNOT BE CONVERTED OR BORKEN DOWN INTO TWO OR MORE SIMPLER SUBSTANCES BY ANY PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL MEANS.
ATOM
BASIC UNIT OF AN ELEMENT WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT EXIST ON ITS OWN
SYMBOL
SHORT FORM OR ABBREVIATED NAME OF THAT ELEMENT. IT REPRESENTS A SPECIFIC ELEMENT OR ONE ATOM OF AN ELEMENT. IT ALSO REPRESENTS THE WEIGHT OF THE ELEMENT EQUAL TO ITS ATOMIC WEIGHT. IT DISTINGUISHES ONE ELEMENT FROM ANOTHER AND IS CHARACTERISTIC OF THAT ELEMENT ONLY.
VALENCY
THE NUMBER OF HYDROGEN ATOMS WHICH ARE COMBINE WITH OR DISPLACE ONE ATOM OF THE ELEMENT OR RADICAL FORMING A COMPOUND. VALENCY OF SOME ELEMENTS WHICH DO NOT COMBINE WITH HYDROGEN THEN BECOMES THE COMBINING POWER OF THE ELEMENT WITH AN ELEMENT WHOSE valency is known
MONOVALENT
VALENCY ONE ELEMENTS ARE SAID TO BE MONOVALENT
DIVALENT
VALENCY TWO ELEMENTS ARE SAID TO BE DIVALENT
TRIVALENT
VALENCY THREE ELEMENTS ARE SAID TO BE TRIVALENT
VARIABLE VALENCY
CERTAIN ELEMENTS THAT EXHIBIT MORE THAN ONE VALENCY. VALENCY IS THE NUMBER OF ELECTRONS LOST OR GAINED FROM THE OUTER SHELL OF AN ATOM OF AN ELEMENT. VARIATION IN THIS LOSS OR GAIN RESULTS IN VARIABLE VALENCY
ION
ANY ATOM OR A GROUP OF ATOMS CARRYING A POSITIVE CHARGE OR A NEGATIVE DUE TO LOSS OR GAIN OF ELECTRONS
CATION
THE POSITIVELY CHARGED IONS
ANIONS
THE NEGATIVELY CHARGED IONS
RADICAL
A GROUP OF ATOMS OF ELEMENTS THAT BEHAVE LIKE A SINGLE UNIT AND SHOW VALENCY
