Symbols And Terminology Flashcards
NWS
National weather service-provides weather data, forecasts and warnings for us and it’s territories and ocean areas
AWC
Aviation weather center-issues airmets, sigmets, convective sigmets, Graphical Forecast for Aviation, and SIGWX PROG significant weather prognostic charts low middle and high, current icing, and forecast icing potential
Cold front
Blue triangles on blue line, triangles point direction that wind is moving. A line separating 2 air masses where the cold, dense air advances and replaces the warm air. Temp decreases. Leads to high wind speeds
Warm front
Red line and circles, circles point in direction of air movement. Transition between warm air and the cold air that it is replacing. Temp increases. Warm air coming in leads to clearing of weather and possible thunderstorms
Occluded front
Purple line with triangles and half circles. When a cold front overtakes a warm front. A cold occlusion is when the coldest air is behind the cold front, warm occlusion when the coldest air is ahead of the warm front.
Associated with thunderstorms, other weather events depending on temp.
Stationary front
A red/blue line with triangles and half circles going in opposite directions. A front between warm and cold air masses that is not moving. Associated with lots of rain, since the air does not move to push it out
How is wind represented on a chart?
It looks like flags, wind direction is from the top of the “flag” to the bottom of the “flagpole”. A long dash is 10kts, a short dash is 5kts, a triangle is 50kts. If there are multiple marks, add them together to get the total wind speed.
What’s this -^-
Turbulence. I point is moderate, 2 stacked points is severe
What is the symbol that looks like this € but rotated so the opening is at the top
Icing. One line through the middle is moderate, 2 is severe
What’s does a line of large arrows symbolize
The jet stream (like a bold line with the wind flags)
