Symbols Flashcards
1
Q
The Cross
A
- Traditional Christian beliefs about the meaning of life.
- Examining magistrate holds a crucifix as he interrogates Meursault, almost like a weapon.
“Weaponizing” religion against those who do not believe in it.
2
Q
The Sun
A
- Hostile force of nature.
- The indifference of the universe towards human life.
Before killing the Arab, the sun’s heat oppresses Meursault without regard for his bodily comfort or peace of mind [general disregard the natural world has for humanity].
Thus, human life is essentially meaningless and no higher or deeper order should be looked for.

Q
Salamano’s Dog
A
- A symbol for routine—control.
All of one’s efforts come to nothing. Without his dog Salamano is left all alone to keep growing old and die lonely. He now has to face reality since he can’t beat his dog anymore.
It seems that Salamano cares more about his dog after his dog was gone than when the dog was in his company.
