A

Symbolises the thought, conflict and divide between the jurors as they argue the case. Also symbols escapism and the outlook on society as whole.

Quotes:

Switchblade (Knife)

A

Represents reasonable doubt and the false integrity and uncertainty fading away from the jurors. Also helps to emphasise the importance and reminder of how serious the case is and that it does deal with murder.

Quotes:
-‘The 8th Juror stands for a moment in silence, then he reaches into his pocket and swiftly redraws a knife….and sticks the knife into the table…’ ‘They are exactly alike.’ - Page 23
-‘There is a burst of sound in the room.’ - Page 23

Ballot in general

A

Symbolises democracy and justice as ideal principles and the trust in the people of the system.

Open Ballot

A

Jurors are easily swayed by the opinions of others and to conform to society. Unreliable way of voting and highlights how the system is flawed.

Quotes:
-‘Seven or eight hands go up immediately. Several others go up more slowly.’ - Page 11.
-‘I think it’s customary to take a preliminary vote.’ (Juror 4) - Page 10.

Secret Ballot

A

Represents and signifies the ideal principle of justice and that is unbiased. It is the best attempt to get an unbiased and just decision.

Quotes:
-“I’ve got a proposition to make. I want to call for a vote. I want eleven men to vote by secret ballot. I’ll abstain. If there are still eleven votes for guilty, I won’t stand alone. We’ll take in a guilty verdict right now.”- Juror 8 (Page 26)
