What are the gospels about?
The gospels are accounts of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus
Gospels are written as historical accounts, but they do not just try to tell us the facts of what happened. What else are they trying to do?
They are also trying to get us to understand the identity and significance of Jesus, often through the use of symbols
Jesus was given Gold, what did this symbolise?
That he would be a King
Jesus cot was an animals feeding trough, a manger. What was this a symbol for?
It shows that he was humble
Jesus was given frankincense. What did this show?
That he would be a Priest
A star was placed above Jesus‘s birthplace, what was this a sign for?
The star was a sign that his birth would be a significant event for the whole of creation
Jesus was given Myrrh, what was this a sign?
Myrrh was a sign that his death would be important
