symbol Color Purple Flashcards
Purple and other colours:
In the beginning Celie wears a lot muted colours and this represents her feeling about her life and herself, she isn’t happy with it all.
Then throughout the book she starts to notice more bright colours and also wears them, this happens when she starts feeling happier about her life.
The colour red is also very important, it stands for femininity and passion.
For example when she starts to see religion in a different way she talks about the colour purple, and her bedroom in the end has a lot of bright colours like yellow and purple. This is when she is happiest with herself and her life.
Sewing:
When she is in Memphis with Shug she starts sewing more, and this is when she starts making pants for herself and other women.
The sewing is a symbol for her independence and when she truly starts to do things that she wants and that make her happy. This is also around the same time that she left Albert, so she is finally independent and her own person.
Quilt:
The quilt she makes In the beginning whit Sofia stands for unity, after the argument with Sofia she suggest making a quilt together.
All these different patterns coming together stan for different people coming together in unity.
God:
In the beginning she writes all her letters to God in order to survive the abuse by her father and later her husband, he plays an important role in her life.
Later in the book she comes to realise that God isn’t an old white man but can be anything, he doesn’t even have to be a person.
Shug tells her that she believes that God wants people to be truly happy.
Nettie also realizes when she is with the Olinka people that god is more than the old man that the church says he is.
