Symbol, Allegory, and Point of View Flashcards
Second-Person Point of View
Though rare, some stories are told using second-person pronouns (you). This casts the reader as a character in the story.
First-Person Point of View
Told by a narrator who is a character in the story and who refers to him - or himself as “I”.
Third-Person Point of View
Use pronouns such as she, he, it and they.
Omniscient
All-knowing.
Limited Omniscient Narrators
Only know and relate what one major minor character thinks and feels.
Omniscient Narrator
Shares what all characters think and feel instead of limiting the narrator’s perspective to just one character.
Symbols
Objects, places, events, or characters that have meaning and significance beyond their physical forms.
Allegory
An entire literary work in which abstract ideas appear in concrete ways.
Archetypes
Symbols in allegories that often have universal meaning, so readers can understand and recognize them more easily.
