Syllabus Point 1 Flashcards
Anthromes
Ecological patterns created by sustained interactions between humans and ecosystems
Eg. Urban village and crop land
Biodiversity
The diversity of different species, genetic variability among individuals within each species and variety of ecosystems.
Type
Variety
Biodiversity loss
The loss (extinction) of species (plant or animal) worldwide and also the local reduction of species in a certain habitat. Less amount of species Less amount of variability
Natural biome
A community of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in. Characterised by temperature and climate
Ecosystem
A community of plants and animals in a non living environment. Both living and non living things within a particular area makeup the ecosystem.
Environment
Natural and man made
Natural environment encompasses all living and non-living things occurring naturally.
Man made environment encompasses man made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity ranging from a scale of buildings to parks.
Sustainability
Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
Carbon cycle
The series of processes by which carbon compounds are interconverted in the environment, involving the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis.
Nitrogen cycle
The series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition
Hydrological cycle
The sequence of conditions through which water passes from vapour in the atmosphere through precipitation upon land or water surfaces and ultimately back into the atmosphere as a result of evaporation and transpiration
Energy flow cycle
The flow of energy in an ecosystem through the food chain. Solar energy enters the ecosystem through photosynthesis. Energy moves through as prey feeds of other organisms.
