What are the benefits and drawbacks of living in Mesopotamia? Think about geography and climate?
Benefits: Stable food supply in the South, has seven signs of civilization. Access to water and minerals. Mountains serve as barriers & protection
Drawbacks: The weather. In the North mild, wet and sometimes it snows. In the South, it is hot, dry and can flood. Building supplies were difficult to find. Not enough natural barriers to keep out enemies. Food shortages in the north, attacks by neighbors and communities. Providing water across different villages.
Why did people move from the Hills of Mesopotamia to the plains?
There was not enough food for everyone in the North.
What was the area where people moved from the northern hills to the plains called?
Sumer
Why did the farmers in Sumer create an irrigation system?
Because it sometimes flooded.
How did the people of Mesopotamia developed their villages?
Some villages built walls and became known as city-states, others just grew as villages.
What factors caused Mesopotamia to become a city state?
- Food Shortage. Solution: People moved to the Southern part of Mesopotamia.
- Floods. Solution: build levees and dams.
- Silt in the river. Solution: Villages worked together to remove the silt.
- Arguing over water. Solution: Was to build walls.
Why do historians classify Sumer as a civilization?
Because it has the seven signs of civilization which are: Stable food supply, highly developed written language, developed culture, technology, system of religion, system of government and system of social structure.
