Switching Flashcards
What is a Bridge?
A bridge is a device that connects netwerk segments using the same communication protocol. A Bridge operates on layer 2. Filters packets based on MAC addresses
What is ASIC?
Application Specific Integrated Circuitry - Moved software based processing of a Bridge into hardware
What is a broadcast domain?
A domain in which a broadcast is forwarded. A broadcast domain contains all devices that can reach each other at the data link layer by using broadcasts. All ports on a switch/hub are in the same broadcast domain. All ports on a router are in different broadcast domains.
What is a CAM Table?
Content Accessible Memory in a switch (empty at first boot), includes MAC-addresses and wil learn these whilst using ARP messages.
What is a HUB?
To provide network communication. Can only send or receive and with 1 host at a time.
What is a collision domain?
A part of the network where packet collisions can occur. All ports on a hub are in the same collision domain. All ports on a switch/bridge or router are in separate collision domains
What is a collision?
A collision is when two devices send a packet at the same time on the shared network segment. When packets collide, both devies must send the packets again,.
What is a SFP?
Small Fiber Plugable - Fiber Optic module to connect fiber wires
