Switches, Routers and VLANS Flashcards
what does a switch do
checks the destination mac address on the packet and forwards it to the port assigned that adress
how does a switch know where a mac address is
checks the sender mac adress on packets send to it and assigns it to the port that it received the packet on
What is a forwarding database
the table that keeps track of the mac addresses on a switch
Important to rember that a port can connect to more nodes via another switch so the table will add all address reachable to the port on the address
what are the three basic functions of a switch
Learning, Forwarding and flooding
what allows a switch to hold a packet when checking for a mac address
Memory buffer.
This is also used if the port is already busy sending or receiving
Does a switch add tracing information
No
What layer does a switch work at
2 as it is only concerned with mac addresses
what layer are IP adresses in
3
why would a switch use flooding
the mac address is unknown so it acts like a hub
What is a collision domain
it is segment of network that on witch collisons of packets are possibe
what is the purpose of a bridge
a device to connect two networks together, works simerly to a switch
why is a bridge used today
connecting two different types of network
EG Cat-6 to fiber
what is a SFP port
a port for high speed networks on switches normally used to connect switches together or to connect switches to servers
what is the connection between two switches called
a uplink
why are switches important to security
they stop packets even being checked by computers that should not see the packet
