Preteritum, or the simple past tense in English, is used to describe actions or events that happened and were completed in the past. For example, “I walked to the store” or “She sang beautifully.”
In Swedish, preteritum is used similarly, like:
“Jag gick till affären” (I walked to the store)
“Hon sjöng vackert” (She sang beautifully)
It’s all about conveying those actions that have already wrapped up.
