Describe the phases of swallowing
Oral prep
Oral: move bolus to back of mouth
Pharyngeal: swallow
esophageal: bolus moves to stomach
For food consistencies what foods are level 4?
mashed potato, apple sauce, squash
What are mechanical soft foods (5)
ground meat, mashed veggies
What is level 6 of dysphagia diet?
Give examples
Soft: Bite sized
diced meat, canned meat, soft fruit (banana/strawberry)
how does poor lip closure affect swallowing?
food may fall out of the mouth
What does poor lateralization effect swallowing?
poor formation of bolus, pocket food
What are some interventions we can do to work on poor lip closure
light touch to lips, stretch, sucking/swallowing activities
if clients have difficulty with tongue movements what are some interventions?
tongue exercises, tongue tip sounds
If a client has sensory difficulty what are some OT interventions?
deep pressure, present new foods slowly and fun
