individual’s capacity for logical thinking, intelligence, perceptiveness, and self-control over impulses to achieve immediate gratification
ego strength
legal rule that protects communications btwn the therapist and pt from being shared in a court proceeding w/o expressed permission; courts often honor this unless there is a risk of public danger or threat to the public good, in which case the SW may be court ordered to share info
privilege
techniquein which the SW clarifies and shows the pt what their feelings are in the moement and encourages furhter expression and understanding of those feelings (often through paraphrasing)
reflective listening
prob solving process in which advice and other helping activity is offered to an individual, group, organization, or community that is faced w/a prob
consultation
trsits of personality, thought, bx, and bales tht are incorporated by the individual, who considers them acceptable and consistent w/their overall true self
ego syntonic
a set of conscious/unconscious emotional reactions to a pt experienced by the therapist, these feelings usually originate in the therapist’s own developmental conflicts/past
countertransference
Rx induced movement d/o that includes uncontrollable physical movement, especially in the face, lips, and tongue, and sometimes repetitive movements of the head, hands and fee
Tardive Dyskinesia
the bx and personality characteristics that are attached to ppl because of their sex, often inaccurately
gender roles
bx modification, the strengthening of a response through the removal of adverse stimuli
negative reinforcement
the act of perceiving, understanding, experiencing and responding to the emotional state and ideas of another person
empathy
an opinion about an individual, group pof phenomenon that is developed w/o proff or systematic evidence (usually negative)
prejudice
championing the rights of individuals or communities through direct intervention or through empowerment. This is a basic obligation of the SW profession
advocacy
in bx modification, the elimination or weakening of a conditioned repsonse by discounting the reinforcement after the response occurs
extinction
a concept that refers to emotional reactions that are assigned to current relationships but organized in earlier experiences (often the feelings a pt has towards the therapist)
transference
in bx mod, a procedure that strengthens the tendency of a response to recur
reinforcement
