What is the definition of ageism?
Refers to prejudice against the aged. Can target people of any age.
Which age group usually rebels against ageism and which age group usually excepts it?
Teenagers usually rebel against ageism and the elderly are more likely to except it.
What is the definition of Gerontology?
It is the study of old age. It is one of the fastest growing areas of study. It covers all aspects of aging and the consequences of aging.
What is the definition of Life Expectancy?
The probable number of years remaining in life determined statistically, affected by such factors as heredity, physical conditions, nutrition and occupation. 70-80.
What is the definition of life span?
The average or maximum length of time an organism, material or object can be expected to survive or last. 144

What is the Wear and Tear Theory?
This is the oldest theory. Aging is the result of repeated use and injury over time. Cells constantly wear out and capacity of repair is exceeded. Osteoarthrisits.
What is the Free Radical Theory?
Products of oxidation result in cell breakdown. Cateracts and Cancer.
What is Immunological Theory?
Decline in immune system increases vulnerabilty to disease. Women live longer then men.
What is Neuroendocrine/Neurochemical Theories?
Exposure to hazards: Carcinogens, sunlight, trauma, infection. All of these things age us.
What is programmed Longevity?
Involuntary inherited process that alters cellular or tissue structures. Genetics.

Continuity Theory
What is the disengagement Theory?
A gradual withdrawal between society and the older adult. Retirement. This theory was proven.
What is the activity Theory?
Remaining active and engaged.
What is the continuity Theory?
Latter part of life is continuous of earlier part.
What is primary aging?
Universal and irreversible physical changes that occur as individuals grow older. Occurs because of aging.
What is secondary aging?
Common illnesses or conditions in aging, caused by habits, genes and other influences. Vary from person to person. Enviornment and lifestyle are two things that can affect this.
Young old?
60-75 0r 65-75
Old-Old (middle old)?
75-85
Oldest-Old (Old-Old)?
85 and up.
What is Erickson- Development Crisis?
Ego Integrity vs. Despair. Older adults need to accept that they are growing older. What affects this is weather tasks are met or unmet. Also, Reminiscence provides fulfillment and purpose. It valadates them.
What is Freuds Psychosexual Development?
Genital Stage are sexual desires met or fullfilled.
What are Havighurst Developmental Tasks?
Adjusting to decreasing physical status and health and adjusting to retirement or the death of a spouse.
What is Piaget’s Cognative Development?
Formal operational stage (Problem solving). Dementia can take this away. Uses abstract thinking and deductive reasoning.
