Sutures Flashcards
Silk suture
Non absorbable, multi filament
Natural - from silkworms
Bombyk mori ( bombycidae family)
Ethibond suture
Non absorbable, multi filament
Synthetic
Use in hernia repair secure patch in place
Vicryl suture
Absorbable multi filament
Prolene suture
Non absorbable, mono filament
Mostly vascular, anastomoses, hernias, abdominal fasciae closure)
Nylon suture
Aka ethilon
Non absorbable mono filament
Chromic catgut suture
Absorbable mono filament
From intestines cows or sheep
Circumcision
PDS suture
Absorbable mono filament
Laparotomy
Close up peritoneum/rectus
Monocryln suture
Absorbable mono filament
Primary closure for skin
What are the two types of gut sutures
Plain and chromic
Differentiate between plain and chromic gut suture
Chromic gut is treated with chromium salts (chromium trioxide), which results in more collagen cross links , making the suture more resistant to breakdown by the body
Vicryl suture: how long does it retain its strength
60%@2weeks and 8%@4weeka
PDS suture: how long does it maintain its tensile strength and how long it takes to complete absorption
70% to 74% at 2 weeks , 50% to 58% at 4 weeks , 25% to 41% at 6 weeks
180 days (6mths)
