Used inside the body where tissues are easier to pierce (fascia, bowel, muscle)
TP or CTX (tapered)
Abdominal fascia
CT or CT-1 (tapered)
Joint space in knee/hip; deep abdominal tissue layers after fascia layer
CT-2 (tapered)
Most commonly used on uterus; various other uses based on needle shape
SH (tapered)
Most commonly used needle; tendency to bend; used on bowel, breast
CV or BV (tapered)
Blood vessels; nerve repair; very small and delicate; Will prob need Castro viejo needle holder
Cutting
Used for skin and very tough tissue
FSLX (cutting)
Large skin closure when a lot of tension is present; common retention sutures; large ortho cases
FSL (cutting)
Drains, skin closure needing higher tension closure
FS2 or PS2 (cutting)
Most common skin closure needle
P3 (cutting)
Skin closure of small incision; hands, facial plastic
Skin suture
Prolene, Ethilon (nylon), PDS, Monocryl, staples; 4-0, 5-0
Subcuticular suture
Ethilon, Vicryl, Monocryl; 3-0, 4-0
Muscle/fascia suture
PDS, Prolene; 1 or 0; looped or non looped
Peritoneum suture
Vicryl, PDS II, Gut plain/chromic; 2-0 or 3-0; usually combined with fascia
