Sustainable Use Of Resources Flashcards
Non-renewable resources
Cannot be replaced by nature
Renewable resources
Can be replaced by nature
What is overgrazing?
Livestock eat too much plant cover on rangelands , not allowing land to replenish
Largest cause of soil degradation ?
Overgrazing
How can we prevent overgrazing ?
Public awareness on pasturelands, protecting certain areas, reducing number of animals fed on land, rotate grazing land
What is overfishing?
Removing organisms from marine environment , not giving them enough time to replenish
Effects of overfishing ?
Species + ecosystems are lost,ocean could collapse,loss of habitat,overcapacity,invasive species,unselective fishing practices
Gill nets results in?
Wastage , collect more fish than needed, overharvesting
Drift nets ?
Snare fish at their gills , nets hang vertically in water
Longlines result in ?
Disrupts coral , other fish which are not needed are caught
Purse Seine nets ?
Large wall of net , closes at bottom , catch tuna
Trawlers ?
Devastates marine ecosystems
Sustainable fishing ?
Introduce quota system , control total allowable catch , improve fisheries
What is sustainability?
Ability to maintain something or to sustain itself
Sustainable development?
Alternatives to protect, conserve to prolong our resources and environment
Sustainable agriculture?
Crop rotations , mixed farms allow use of manure ,conserving natural areas, farming multiple crops = reduce financial risk
Free Range
Animals graze on their own time , not kept in cages , natural process
Factory Farming
Animals kept in cages , bigger size meat , animals cannot move around freely
Food security
Everyone has access to healthy nutritional food ——> healthy lifestyle
Appropriate farming techniques
Plant crops near each other ——> pests cannot destroy crops
Waste products ——> replenish nutrients in soil
Crops are rotated ——> maintain nutrients in soil
Animals treated fairly
Animals fed properly
Cloning of animals
Producing a genetically identical copy of an organism
Advances in animal nutrition
Genetically modified crops with nutritional benefits
Veterinary medicine
Deals with —-> prevention , diagnosis , treatment of diseases , injury and disorders
Artificial insemination
Injecting semen into uterus of female animal
Embryo transfer
Embryos placed into uterus of female animal to establish pregnancy
