sustainable management of the tropical rainforests and mangroves Flashcards
what are environmental functions
provide oxygen, carbon storage, prevent coastal erosion [ mangroves], prevent soil erosion [tropical rainforest], habitat for diverse animal life
how do tropical rainforests generate oxygen
they generate oxygen through photosynthesis, through the process in which they absorb carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and water to produce oxygen and sugar for the plant. furthermore, since they are evergreen, they can produce oxygen year-round.
how do tropical rainforests and mangroves contribute to carbon storage
during the process of photosynthesis, the plant will absorb the carbon dioxide in the air, while it still loses some carbon dioxide during respiration, most of it is store in a solid state in the plant’s stem, leaves, and roots.
how do tropical rainforests prevent soil erosion
when it rains, the leaves, branches, and stems of the rainforest plants slow down the droplets, therefore the raindrops hit the ground with less force, and more water can infiltrate and percolate into the soil. the roots of the plants also help to bind the soil together, making it harder for the soil to erode. thus the overall soil erosion by flowing water is minimized.
how do mangroves prevent coastal erosion
the dense root systems of the mangrove plant help to trap and nid loose sediments together, therefore making it harder for the sediments to be washed away by the waves. the roots and trunks of the mangroves also help to cause friction when the waves hit the coast, slowing the waves down. thus the waves will lose a significant amount of energy, reducing coastal erosion.
how are the tropical rainforests used by people
the tropical rainforests are used by people for recreational, habitual, source of food and raw materials purposes.
how is the rainforests used for habitual purposes
there are still several million of people today living in the rainforests, they are called the indigenous people.
how are tropical rainforests used for recreation
tropical rainforests are recreational sites for people living in the city to get closer to nature, for example, camping, hiking and birdwatching.visiting forests have a positive effect on peoples health and well-being.
how do tropical rainforests provide a source of food
many common types of fruits come from plants that grow in the trp[ival forests. such as mangoes, cashew nuts, eggplants, cocoa pods, and beans. some mangroves in coastal areas have been converted into farma that rear fish for sale to customers in towns and cities.
how do tropical rainforests provide a source of raw materials
the rainforests are best known for for being valuable sources of wood. in some parts of the world metals and minerals can be found in the ground beneath the tropical rainforests. these raw materials are very valuable. the process of mining is that the forest must be cleared completely by burning or bulldozing the trees than to dig into the ground and extract these raw materials.
what are the consequences of extracting resources from the tropical forests
deforestation and enhanced green house effect
what is deforestatuon
it is the permenant removal of tropical rainforests.
what is the enhanced greenhouse effect
it is when certain gases in the atmosphere are capable of trapping heat. one of the gases is carbon dioxide. the mor ecarbon dioxide, the thicker the layer of carbon dioxide, trapping more heat in the earth, increasing temperatures.
