Sustainable Energy Sources Flashcards
What are the three types of sustainable energy
- Ground heating
- Air source pump
- Geothermal energy
What are ground source heat pumps
A ground source heat pump transfers heat from the ground outside someone’s home, into there radiators and/or underfloor heating. It can also heat stored water in a hot water cylinder for taps and showers
What are the benefits of Ground source heat pumps
- Could lower an individuals fuel bills
- Reduce an individuals household carbon footprint
- Heats an individuals home as well as their water
What scale can ground source heat pumps cover
Local scale individual homes with large gardens
How do ground source heat pumps work
Heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid, which is then passed through a heat exchanger and turned into heat
What are air source heat pumps
An air source heat pump transfers heat from the outside air to water. This water then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump, which then raises the temperature then transfers that heat into water
What are the benefits of a air source heat pump
- Lower an individuals heat bill
- Will lower an individuals carbon emissions
- Can heat an individuals home and water
What scale can air source heat pumps be used
Local scale ranging from an induvial home into schools and offices
What is geothermal energy
The thermal energy in the Earths crust which is formed from the radioactive bio decay of material. The Earths mantel also causes some rocks to melt
How does Geothermal Energy work
Water is drawn from under ground resources to the surface to produce steam. This steam then drives turbines that generate heat
What scale can Geothermal Energy be used at
National and international scales
Iceland has a energy grid ran from Geothermal energy
What benefits does Geothermal energy have
- There is a virtually infinite supply
- More environmentally friendly
- Can be built underground reduces land uptake
- Carbon emissions free
