Sustainable Development - Companies, Workplace, Transport Flashcards

Q

How are large companies becoming more sustainable? (3 companies)

A

ASDA was spending vast amounts of money disposing of waste packaging. They now send their waste to recycling companies which means plastic no longer goes to landfill and is recycled (less energy spent making more, crude oil running out - not used on plastic) and Asda gets money for their waste and these savings can be passed onto customers.

NOKIA now trades in mobile phones and sells the parts to recycling companies. These parts can be used to make lots of things ranging from trumpets to park benches.

Indian low cost airline GO AIR now only hires female cabin crew believing they weigh less than their male counterparts (on average 20kg lighter). Less fuel can be used. This saves crude oil and will save around $500,000 dollars a year - savings can be passed onto customers.

Q

How is sustainability in the workplace increasing? (4 policies)

A

E-mails are being used over paper mail which saves on paper and fuel costs and means corporations are demanding less trees to be cut down.

Computers are being installed with energy saving software - screens can dim after a period of non use and eventually turn themselves off. This saves electricity.

Tourist destinations provide lots and lots of recycling bins so resources can be reused instead of going into landfill putting less stress onto resources.

Hotels are beginning to ask their guests to leave towels in the bath if they do not require washing. This saves energy on washing and reduces the amount of soap used (so less soap manufactured). It also can save money on labour costs which can be put into further sustainable development (eg. refurbishing rooms with double glazing etc.)

Q

Describe the developments in sustainable transportation.

A

Congestion charges have been introduced into cities such ad London. Local authorities charge people to go into certain areas at peak times if driving a car which deters you from driving and may persuade you to take public transportation such as the Underground or a bus.

Park and Ride Schemes such as in Chester are being used. Visitors park their cars on the outskirts of the city centre very cheaply (£1.70 for Chester) and then board a bus into the centre. This reduces the number of vehicles in the city centre so there are less carbon emissions and fumes which is good for the environment and will attract tourist as well as speeding up journey times and making it safer for pedestrians.

Boris Bikes are being introduced in London. There are bikes available for use all over the city making it very convenient to cycle around. It is a lot cheaper than driving or using the Underground which reduces carbon emissions a great deal as well as making the streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists with less cars on the roads.

Incentives are being given to low emission cars in city centres such as Manchester as a part of the Green Badge Scheme. Low carbon emitting vehicles are allowed to park for free in the city centre which encourages commuters to invest in cars better for the environment to avoid the extortionate parking charges.
