Sustainable Building Flashcards
Concrete
Paste + aggregate + air
Paste
Cement + drinking water
Better paste : reduce cement/water ration but water gives workability
Aggregate
Loose, particulate material, such as sand gravel or pebbles added to cementing agent to make concrete
Concrete formation
Mix aggregates water and cement (hydration)
Formation of nodes on the cement particles
Growth of the nodes till they link up
Goes on during all the life of the concrete
Asphalt concrete
Mieral aggregates and asphalt (= paste)
Coal combustion products
By products generated from burning coal • fly ash • bottom ash • boiler slag • flue gas desulphuration gypsum => can all be reuse in concrete production
Mortar
Bonding material used in masonry surfacing and plastering. Especially a mixture of cement or lime, sand and water that hardens in place and is used to bind together brucks or stones
Lime
Any of various mineral and industrial forms of calcium oxide differing chiefly in water content and percentage of constitutents such as magnesia, silica, alumina and iron
Fly ash
Fine particulate ash sent up by the combustion of a solid fuel and discharged as an airbone emission or recovered as a by-product for various commercial uses
Grout
Thin coarse mortar poured into narrow cavities to fill them and consolidate the adjoining objects into a solid mass
Slag
Grayish aggregate left as a residue of blast furnaces
Mixture of silicates with calcium, phosphorus, sulphur…
Gypsum
Colourless or white mineral used in the manufacture of plaster, cement, paint, school chalks
Silica fumes
Ultrafine powder collected as a by-product of the silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production
Spherical particles of average 150nm diameter
Pour concreter
Couler du béton
Mould concrete
Mouler du béton
