sustainable biomes Flashcards
1
Q
def of a biome
A
- a community of plants and animals that extend over a large area due to similarities of climate and elevation.
2
Q
biomes
A
- terrestrial(land based(
- aquatic(water based)
- Variations in the visible landscape and animals that have adapted to the climate
- BIOMES MOVE AS THE CLIMATE CHANGES
-diversity and functional understanding= our survivl and wellbeing - biomes have adapted to changing climates and human interference.
- biomes are practially a large group of similar ecosystems
- biomes have a similar weather, rainfall, animals and plants.
3
Q
what is a ecosystem
A
- an ecosystem includes all the living elements in each area, ineractin with each other and the non living environments.
- each organims has a role to play
4
Q
habitat
A
- specifically where a species of organism lives.
5
Q
influence of climate on biomes
A
- affects the location, climate and soil
(soil -> flora and fauna)- bc of difference in temp and precipitation patterns - productivity -> how many consumer species a biome can support
- extreme climate- low productivity, lor precipitation, poor soil quality
6
Q
how climate is influenced
A
- distance from equator(latitude)
- distance from the sea
- landforms surrounding
- elevation(altitude)
- ocean currents
- air movement
7
Q
latitude
A
- focus of rays on equator- curved earth- suns rays travel more spread out- sun does not heat up earth as effectively (why the poles are colder)
- influences rainfall and photosynthesis.
8
Q
altitude
A
- the higher up variations in the landscape, harsher climate, worse soil and low precipitation
9
Q
landforms
A
- mountain ranges affect amount of pre that reaches inland areas
- prevent moisturised winds form reaching inland areas (they create borders)
10
Q
ocean current
A
- continuous movement of ocean water that flows in oceans driven by gravity and wind
11
Q
ocean currents and air movements
A
- currents are generated through = earths rotation, wind, temp, salinity, diff of moon gravitation.
-evaporation- increases temp and humidity -> rain and sand storms
-cold ocean currents + warm land mass = cold ocean currents cool the air- less evaporation = drier areas- arid(desert) - ## dry air + warm land( the water starts to heat up) = less likely to release moisture - arid areas.
12
Q
soil in biomes
A
- determines which plants and animals inhabit the area
- characteristics + productivity of the soil: temperature and precipitation
- rocks and minerals make up the bedrock which is the basis of soil development:
altitude, soil and vegetation cover
13
Q
reasons for soil type and productivity
A
- biomes with higher temperature and rainfall = have more abundant soil
- erosion of bedrock -> more rapid and faster decomposing organic matter = more and nutricious soil
- this provides the biome with nutrients in a continuous cycle.
