Sustainable And Responsible Living - Environmental Key Terms Flashcards
Sustainable and responsible living
Leading our lives in a way that has the minimum possible negative impact on the environment
Greenhouse gases
Gases that trap heat to help keep the earth warm. If too many of these gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) build up in the atmosphere, they trap too much heat and will cause global warming.
Fossil fuels
Natural fuels formed from the remains of plants and animals, e.g. coal, oil and gas
Climate change
Any long-term significant change in average weather patterns
Global warming
This is the long-term rise in the average temperature in the earth. Global warming is caused from too many greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere
Ozone layer
Layer of the earths upper atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, protecting us from it. The ozone layer is damaged by greenhouse gases
Carbon footprint
This is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced directly and indirectly by human activities like burning fossil fuels for transport and heating
