Sustainability 8.3 Flashcards
1
Q
Habitat Destruction?
A
- Gases put into the atmosphere causing bleaching in Great B Reef
- Removing the casing of the machine & leaving active parts exposed > collapse.
2
Q
Overcropping?
A
- When more animals are killed then being born (problem in aquatic species > overfishing).
- Whaling, killed faster than being born.
- Ecologists research allows new laws & regulations to be passed to stop this.
3
Q
Oil Spills?
A
It floats on surface of water because:
- less dense than water
- Oil can’t dissolve in water
- Oil forms layer than stops oxygen and sunlight entering water.
- 2010, oil rig leaked oil into Gulf, caused major destruction.
4
Q
Pollution? And Types
A
Any contaminating substance introduced to the environment that causes advert changes.
- Air
- Land
- Light
- Noise
- Water
5
Q
Air Pollution & Agriculture
A
- produce large amounts of methane as livestock digests grass
- Methane is 30 times more effective at trapping heat in atmosphere than CO2
6
Q
Land Pollution & Toxic Smart Phones
A
- Phones contain lead, cadmium & mercury
- When sent to landfill toxic chemicals leach out into groundwater > huge risk.
7
Q
Light Pollution & Turtle Hatchling Confusion
A
-beachside settlements look brighter than horizon so they venture to the land instead of ocean.
8
Q
Sound Pollution & Cetacean Communication
A
- Cetaceans (dolphins, whales, porpoise) reply on underwater sound.
- Sonar, propellers, explosives & construction interferes with communication.
9
Q
Water Pollution & the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
A
- Rubbish vortex between America & Japan, all trapped.
- Plastics break into micro plastics > hundreds of hears to break down.
