Sustainability:
The ability for something to keep going at the same rate or condition as it was before.
Global Sustainability:
Comes down to the use of resources over time, focuses on the world as a whole and how individual resources are being exploited globally
Product:
A service or object created as a result of a process that is used to serve a need or satisfy a want.
Process:
Sequence of linked procedures which consume one or more resources in order to convert a input into an output.
System:
Detailed procedures used to carry out a specific activity or to solve a problem.
Difference between process and a system:
Process is a conceptual sequence of events that enables business to operate.
Systems are tools used to execute the process.
PMI:
P: Plus - positive outcomes of a situation
M: Minus - negative outcomes of a situation
I: Interesting - interesting outcomes of a situation
SWOT:
S: Strengths of hanging something
W: Weaknesses of hanging something
O: Opportunities of having something
T: Threats of having something
Triple Bottom Line:
3 P’s
Planet (ecological): involves viewing the environmental factors and how they are set up to have minimal damage to the environment.
Eg: Not using products that are harmful to the environment.
People: (social): refers to how fair a company is with labour they use and the community in which they operate.
Eg: Fair salaries, Appropriate working hours, safe working environment.
Profit: (financial): The amount of money a company generates.
Consideration in regarding the overall economic impact that the company has on the environment.
Sustainable patterns of living:
Meeting the needs of individuals in the present without compromising the ability of future generations and their needs.
Three Pillars of Sustainability:
Social, Environmental, economical.
powerful tools used for defining the complete sustainable problem.
If any one pillar is weaker than the other, then the whole system becomes unsustainable.
Social Responsibility:
A duty every individual has to perform in order to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystem.
Environmental responsibility:
Sustainability terms referring to goods and services, laws, guidelines and policies that inflict or reduce minimal damage upon the ecosystem.
Sustainable Issues:
Water: one of the major issues and has the biggest impact on society. Need to be smart on how we manage water consumption. (Not having long showers, only using sprinklers on specific days)
Population: increase in population means increase in the consumption of resources. We need to make sure we have enough resources for everyone.
Carbon footprint: how individuals accept and carry out their responsibilities to reduce their effect on the environment. (Using renewable energy-solar power, recycling)
Different organisations to help maintain sustainability:
Local: (Melville) -Recycling
Product: bins
Process: bin collectors going through everyone’s rubbish to see if they are viable for recycling.
System: instructions behind it, different days needed for recycling bins.
Federal: Western Australian
Product: good sammy’s bins
Process: going through the clothes
System: instructions behind what items to give away.
Global: World wildlife fund
Product: Fresh water
Process: finding threats that harm the water, implementing solutions.
System: hope the organisation carries out the testing.
