Sustainability Flashcards
1
Q
What is conservation?
A
Preserving plants and animals and their habitats.
2
Q
Why is conservation important?
A
- Prevent damage to unpredictable food chains
- Protect food supply
- Protect resources that can be used in medicine
- Protect tourist values
- Protects species from extinction
3
Q
What factors do we have to bear in mind when protecting a species?
A
- Number of suitable habitats
- Competition from other animals
- Size of population (if there is enough variation for the species to survive)
4
Q
Why are whales held in captivity?
A
- Captive breeding programs
- Research
- Entertainment
5
Q
What are the views on laws on whaling?
A
- Difficult to set and police laws
- Some countries want to lift the ban
6
Q
What are the views on killing whales for research?
A
- Some scientists say we should kill whales to research how they can survive at great depths
- Some say we should keep whales alive to research migration patterns and communication
7
Q
What is sustainable development?
A
Taking enough resources to satisfy our needs but leaving more for the future, eg. fishing quotas so there is enough fish left to breed, or replanting woods.
8
Q
What does an increasing population mean for sustainable development?
A
It is crucial now because:
- Alternative energy supplies will be needed for when fossil fuels run out.
- Increasing food demands
- As more people will need more resources, sustainable development will ensure the survival of endangered species
