Sustainability Flashcards
What is sustainability?
basic economic problem, infinite number of wants, finite number of resources. meeting the needs and desires of the current population without affecting future generations
describe the best hierarchy of waste
prevent waste, minimise waste, reuse product and component, recover material and energy, landfill
what are the 6 tools for design sustainability
life extension, obsolescence, dematerialisation, remanufacture, design for disassemble and industrial symbiosis
describe life extension
increasing length of product life eg software updates, repairable
what are the 4 types of obsolescence?
technology, trend planned and function
what is deserialisation?
reducing the amount of material used
what is remanufacture?
salvaging and repairing, refilling
what is design for disassembly?
design that allows it to be disassembled so that it can be repaired or remanufactured.
what is industrial symbiosis?
using the waste of another industry as a material in their product
what are the 3 assessment tools for sustainability?
LCA (life cycle assessment), EIA (Environmental impact assessment and audit), F5 (Fast 5)
what is LCA?
material extraction, material processing, manufacture and assemble, distribution, product usage, repair, recycling.
what is EIA?
environmental impact assessment, environmental audit
what is the fast 5?
Energy, Service, Product value, Dangerous waste and recycling
what does WEEE stand for?
waste electrical and electronic equipment
what does RoHS stand for?
restriction of hazardous substances
