SUSPENSION, SALTATION, TRACTION, SOLUTION. Flashcards
What is the objective of the lesson?
To understand how sediment is moved and deposited along the coastline
What are the four main processes of sediment transport?
- Suspension
- Saltation
- Traction
- Solution
What is suspension in sediment transport?
Small particles are carried in the water and can make it look cloudy
Define saltation in the context of sediment transport.
The load is bounced along the sea bed, as currents cannot keep the larger and heavier material afloat for long periods
What does traction refer to in sediment movement?
Pebbles and larger sediments are dragged along the sea bed by the waves as they are too heavy to be carried
Explain the process of solution in sediment transport.
Minerals are dissolved in the sea water and carried in solution
What factors influence the movement of sediment along the coastline?
- The power of the waves
- The wind
- The angle and direction of the longshore current
- Continual swash and backwash
What happens during deposition?
Deposition occurs when sediments are set down as currents slow due to frictional forces or other counter currents
Fill in the blank: Sediments are deposited when currents _______.
slow down
