Initial briefing from O/C suspects to suspects team
The initial briefing should encompass:
- the circumstances of the offence including an analysis of the scene and witness evidence available
- the full details of all persons of interest and any suspect where the identity of the suspects are
- details of any descriptions of the suspect provided by witnesses a ( a schedule of descriptions may prepared to assist)
- whether any particular modus operandi/crime signatures have been identified.
When appointing an officer to interview a witness to a serious offence what four main issues should be considered regarding the potential interviewing officer
- The level of training of the interviewer
- the experience the officer has interviewing witnesses in major investigations
- any additional skills the interviewer has which may be advantageous in the circumstances
- the suitability of the officer to undertake the interview
Describe who is responsible during the investigation for determining the status of a persons a suspect/witness/victim etc
Lies with the O/C investigation
During an investigation into multiple suspects for a serious offence what steps can investigators take to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of forensic contamination between the suspects
Suspects must be kept apart including during travel in vehicles and when in cells.
All clothing should be packaged labelled and sealed in accordance with standard procedures before transfer ot O/C exhibits.
During the suspects phase of an investigation it is important for the O/C suspects to regularly brief their team members. What general matters should covered be during the debrief.
The enquires they have conducted and results of those enquires
Priority information must be brought to the attention of the O/C investigation as necessary
What should you consider with dealing with a suspect(something to do with physically)
Consider the condition of the suspect whether they are injured under the influence of alcohol drugs or suffer from medical or mental impairment or special consideration
The O/C suspects must investigate all suspects throughly in order of priority as decided in consultation with the O/C investigation . What particular matters may influence the setting of the priorities
- relative weight of evidence against the other person or the likelihood of them leaving the area.
- You may also be influence by the particular urgency in solving the case or the availability of staff
What responsibilities does the O/C suspects have when an alibi is put forward by an offender concerning a matter in respect of which proceedings have commenced
It is the responsibility of the O/C suspects to make thorough enquiries to determine the veracity of the alibi and to fully report the result to the crown solicitor , via the 2IC
Provide four points for dealing with the suspect of a homicide
- Separate suspects from other persons at the scene
- Consider the condition of the suspect whether they are injured under the influence of alcohol drugs or suffer from medical or mental impairment or special consideration
- As them to remain at the scene and to co - operate with police.As soon as possible, remove the suspect from the scene by consent or with lawful justification
- If suspect refuses to co-operate consider whether grounds exits to arrest them and what the most appropriate offence will be.
- To prevent cross contamination issues, consider using officer who have not entered the scene to manage the suspect if available
