Survival Guide Exam Studying Flashcards
how do you add integers with different signs?
look at the bigger number and subtract the smaller number from the bigger number and add the bigger numbers sign
How do you add integers with the same signs?
add normally and add the right sign after
How do you subtract integers with different signs?
Change the positive to a negative and add them normally. Add a negative sign at the end
how do you subtract integers with the same sign?
Subtract normally and add appropriate sign after
What are the multiplying and dividing rules for integers?
two of the same sign make a POSITIVE and two different signs make a NEGATIVE. (multiply and divide normally)
What is BEDMAS?
Brackets Exponents Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction It is the order you solve multi step equations
How do you add an dsubtract fractions?
- change all fractions into improper fractions
- find a common denominator for all fractions by multiplying or dividing
- add or subtract the numerators an dleave the denominators the same. reduce if possible
How do you multiply fractions?
- change all into improper fractions
2. multiply nmerator by numerator and denominator by denominator
How do you divide fractions?
change all into improper
flip the second fraction around
multiply straight across
How do you simplify exponents when you are multiplying them together and they have the same base?
if they have the same base you add the exponents together
How do you simplify exponents when you are dividing them and they have the same base?
subtract the exponents
How do you simplify when you have a power to a power?
If they have the same base, multiply the exponents together
What is a literal coefficent?
refers to the letters or variables (things we dont know) This is the piece directly from the equation ex. 4y, -3qw
What is a numerical coefficent?
refers to the number in front of a variable including the sign
How do you solve for x with fractions?
- make sure all numbers are as a fraction and find a common denominator
- multiply all numerators by the common denominator
- divide each term by it’s denominator
- isolate the variable normally
What is Pythagorean theorem?
a(squared)+b(squared)=c(squared)
What is a direct variation?
goes through coordinates (0,0), does not have a constant number, does not have a flat fee or initial cost/value ex. C=30n
What is a partial variation?
Does not go through coordinates (0,0), has a constant number, has a flat fee or initial cost/value. ex. C=30n+5
What is standard form?
Ax+By+C=0
- there cannot be fraction
- A cannot be negative
- must equal 0
What is slope-y-intercept form?
y=mx+b
- x and y are possible coordinates
- m is the slope
- b is the y intercept
How can you tell if a line is parallel?
They have the same slope
they do not have a point of intersection
How do you know if lines are perpindicular?
They have opposite slopes or negative recipricol slopes
How do you find the equation of a line given slope and a point?
- use the slope y intercept form and put in the values you know
- Substitute x and y for the x and y coordinates given to you
- solve for b
- re-write the equation as slope y intercept (without x and y values)
How do you find the equation of a line given 2 points?
Use the slope formula to find the slope.
- use your slope and one set of coordinates to solve for b (like you have slope and one set of points)
- re-write the equation in slope y intercept form
How do you check your point of intersection?
you substitute the coordinates of the point of intersection into the equation (slope y intercept form) and solve to see if they balance out. Do this for the equation of both lines.
How do you find the point of intersection between an undefined line and a zero slope?
You can just use their x and y as the coordinates because they both have either an x or y value.
What is OAT?
Opposite angle theorem- opposite angles are equal
What is SA?
Supplementary angles- angles that add up to 180 degrees
What is CA?
Complimentary angles- angles that add up to 90 degrees
What is ASTT?
Angle sum triangle theorem- all angles in a triangle add up to 180
What is EAT?
Exterior Angle Theorem- exterior angle equals the sum of the 2 oppsoite interior angles
What is ITT?
Isoceles triangle theorem- the angles opposite the equal sides are also equal
What is ETT?
Equilateral Triangle Theorem- all angles are always 60 degrees
What is TPT-F?
Corresponding angles- form an f pattern- corresponding angles are equal
What is TPT-Z?
Alternating Angles- form a z pattern- alternating angles are equal
What is TPT-C?
Co-interior Angles- form a c pattern- add up to 180
