Survival and Response (finish practical) Flashcards
What must organisms do in order to survive?
Respond to their environment.
What does responding to their environment do for an organism?
It increases their chances of survival, by responding to changes in the external environment.
What are examples of an organism responding to the environment, increasing their chance of survival?
- Animals can move away from harmful environments (e.g. too hot or too cold).
- Plants change the way they grow in an attempt to find more favourable environmental conditions.
What else do organisms do to increase their chance of survival?
Organisms respond to changes in their internal environment to make sure the conditions are always optimal for their metabolism.
What is an organisms metabolism?
All the chemical reactions that go on inside them.
What do simple organisms do as a response to environmental changes?
Simple responses, either:
•Tactic (taxis)
•Kinetic (kinesis
What is a tactic response?
Directional movement in response to a stimulus, the direction of the stimulus affects the response.
What is an example of a tactic response?
Woodlice moving away from light.
How is woodlice moving away from light beneficial?
Because it helps them to survive:
•It keeps them concealed under stones during the day (where they’re safe from predators).
•It keeps them in damp conditions (reducing water loss).
What is a kinetic response?
Non-directional (random) movement in response to stimulus, the intensity of the stimulus affects the response.
What is an example of a kinetic response?
Woodlice in response to humidity.
What do woodlice do in conditions of high humidity?
They move slowly and turn less often, so they stay where they are.
What do woodlice do in response to low humidity?
As the air gets drier, they move faster and turn more often, so that they move into a new area.
Why is woodlice responding this way to levels of humidity beneficial?
Because it improves their chance of survival by reducing water loss and staying concealed (in more humid areas).
